Artificial Insemination (A.I.)
In this process, a fertile fraction of sperm is deposited in the womb, timed to coincide with ovulation. The fertile fraction consists of mobile spermatozoa separated from the other components. To increase the probability of success, ovulation is stimulated, but only slightly so as to avoid multiple pregnancy.
AI is a simple technique, but the sperm must contain at least five million mobile spermatozoa and the woman´s fallopian tubes must be unobstructed. Efficacy is around 15-20% per cycle. At the third or fourth unsuccessful attempt, other techniques are available such as ICSI (IntraCytoplasmatic Sperm Injection) or IVF (In Vitro Fertilization).
The use of donor sperm – strictly with the consent of the interested couple – is reserved for cases where it is impossible to use the male partner´s sperm. For this, our institute works with sperm banks that perform detailed physical and psychological tests of the donors to totally guarantee quality.
